ON BUGS THAT LOVE TO BITE ROCKHOUNDS

Insect fossils and insect evolution; current fears of insect-transmitted

disease in Connecticut
     Categorization of insects, analogous to the Mohr Scale, will be presented.Shale and amber embedded insects currently housed at the Yale Peabody Museum will be demonstrated with approximate timelines.  A relationship between disease vector insect and current species will be briefly discussed. Finally, the current role of vector arthropods (mosquitoes and ticks) will be related to the Connecticut diseases (West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis & Lyme disease chiefly) they transmit.
