Herkimer Diamonds are famous among mineral collectors the world over and mineral experts say that they are the finest Quartz crystals on the planet.  These wonderful crystals are so visually spectacular they dazzle even non-rockhounds.

Starting with the amazing characteristics of quartz as a substance, you will learn what to look for in your own Herkimers.  Then you’ll learn the 14 step process by which these gems are believed to have formed in central upstate New York.

Hunting Herkimers started in earnest in the 1950's.  Each of the significant mines will be discussed, providing historical insight, specific location, and current activities.

Finally, we will watch a group of seasoned rockhounds from the Bristol and Meriden G&M Clubs dig at the Hastings’ mine - insight into how a real mining operation progresses – spiced with a wee bit of humor.

Both before and after the formal presentation you will be able to ask questions and examine several interesting specimens that demonstrate what to look for in your own collection.
